Snowboard Helmets

Giro Snowboard Helmets

Giro snowboard helmets are built to offer reliable protection, comfort, and confidence for riders of every level. Choosing the right snowboard helmet starts with understanding a few key questions about safety, fit, and longevity, covered below.

Do You Need a Helmet for Snowboarding?

Yes. While wearing a helmet is not legally required at most resorts, it significantly reduces the risk of serious head injury and is strongly recommended for riders of every level, from first-timers to experienced park riders. A properly fitted snowboard helmet protects against falls, collisions, and impacts with hard-packed snow or obstacles, and most resorts and instructors encourage or require one for lessons and park access.

Are Ski and Snowboard Helmets the Same?

Yes, in most cases. Ski helmets and snowboard helmets generally meet the same safety standards and use similar construction, so a single helmet can usually be worn for both sports. The exception is at the more specialised ends of the range: ski race helmets are built for high-speed piste skiing and are often compatible with a removable chinbar accessory, which isn't typically needed for the seated, lower-speed impacts of snowboarding. Snowboarders are generally better served by freestyle helmets, which prioritise the kind of all-round impact protection and soft ear coverage that suits park riding and repeated falls.

Can You Use a Skate or Bike Helmet for Snowboarding?

No, not safely. Skateboard and bike helmets are certified to different impact standards and are not designed for the cold, repeated low-speed falls, or temperature range involved in snowboarding. A dedicated snowboard helmet is built and certified specifically for snow sports, with insulation, goggle compatibility, and impact protection suited to riding conditions that a skate or bike helmet does not provide.

How Should a Snowboard Helmet Fit?

A snowboard helmet should fit snugly all around the head without any pressure points, and it should not shift or wobble when you shake your head side to side. The helmet should sit level, just above the eyebrows, with the chin strap fastened securely but comfortably enough to fit one finger underneath. If you can rock the helmet more than a centimetre in any direction, the fit is too loose and the size or adjustment dial needs tightening.

How to Measure Head Size for a Snowboard Helmet?

Wrap a soft tape measure around the head just above the eyebrows and ears, keeping it level all the way around, and note the measurement in centimetres. This head circumference is then matched against the size chart for each helmet model, since sizing can vary slightly between styles.

How Long Do Snowboard Helmets Last?

Most snowboard helmets last around three to five years with regular use, depending on care and storage. A helmet should always be replaced immediately after any significant impact, even if there is no visible damage, since the internal materials that absorb impact energy can be compromised without obvious signs on the shell. It is also worth replacing a helmet that no longer fits snugly, since a loose, worn-in fit reduces how effectively it can protect against impact.

Advanced Protection and MIPS Technology

Protection is the foundation of every Giro snowboard helmet. Many models feature MIPS® technology, designed to help reduce rotational forces during angled impacts. Choosing a snowboard helmet with MIPS adds an extra layer of protection without compromising comfort or fit.

Fit Systems Built for Riding, Not Just Standing Still

Giro snowboard helmets use the InForm™ 2 Fit system, a rear dial that allows riders to fine-tune the fit on the lift or mid-run, even while wearing gloves. This matters more in snowboarding than in skiing, since riders spend more time seated, strapped in, or adjusting gear on uneven ground, so a fit that holds steady through movement and impact is worth more than one that only feels good standing still. The range also includes dedicated women's snowboard helmets, built on the same protection standards with sizing suited to a smaller head shape.
