The Tour de France is Here

It’s time for the biggest race of the year, the Tour de France. Team Visma | Lease a Bike comes to France with three stages and the Overall GC victory at Giro d’Italia under their belt, plus a two-time champion in Jonas Vingegaard. Jonas was runner-up last year, and his intense rivalry with Tadej Pogacar provided fans with fireworks at the recent Dauphiné Libere where the two riders were clearly on a level above the rest. But Visma also has a dark horse contender in American Matteo Jorgenson, who won Paris-Nice for the second year in a row and finished 6th at the Dauphiné.

With unquestionable talent, shrewd tactical acumen, and the unparalleled technical advantages born of Giro’s passion for design and obsession with innovation, Visma is poised for success in France.

The Race

Sprint and Breakaway Stages

The 2025 Tour opens with a relatively traditional week of flat to rolling stages, which typically results in bunch sprints or breakaways battling it out from a small group. Visma is firmly focused on the overall GC competition, and the team will rely on the Eclipse Spherical as their helmet of choice for optimized aerodynamics to save energy but stay comfortable when racing 4 to 6 hours. For the breakaways, superstar Wout Van Aert may get a break for domestique duties and look to land Tour de France stage win #10.

Time Trials

Time Trial Stages

This year’s Tour features over almost 50km of critical time trials which will undoubtedly help decide the overall race. For the long flat TT on Stage 5, Visma will take the start ramp in the groundbreaking Aerohead II helmet, having played a key role in the development of this radical aerodynamic tool in the “race of truth.” The team has three potential winners in Jonas, Matteo, and Wout. The short, entirely uphill TT to Peyragoudes is quite unusual and conditions on the day may ultimately dictate helmet choice.

Mountain Stages

Nothing compares to the sweltering heat and screaming crowds of the Tour de France’s biggest mountain days. Visma fields a squad of proven climbers including Jonas, Matteo and Giro d’Italia champion Simon Yates, and they will certainly rely on the Aries Spherical for the mountain stages, when its amazing low weight and ventilation optimized for the relatively low speeds found on long climbs may give them the winning edge they need. The legendary climbs like Hautacam, La Plagne, and Mont Ventoux (and the hair-raising descents that come along with mountain stages) are precisely the terrain where Aries shines.

FAQ

Which Giro Sport Design helmets do Visma riders wear?
The pros on Visma will wear 3 key helmets. The Eclipse Spherical will be their choice for balanced aerodynamics and ventilation for flat and rolling stages, where a sprint or breakaway is likely. The Aerohead II, developed in direct cooperation with the team, will be used for Time Trials, where its radically optimised aerodynamic shape provide the best advantages for solo riders on specialised equipment. The Aries Spherical is Team Visma’s choice for mountain stages, where ultra-low weight and excellent ventilation are key advantages.

What is the Tour de France?
The Tour de France is one of the three “Grand Tours” of cycling, with the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana as the other two. It is the oldest and most prestigious, and this will be the 112th edition. The course covers more than 3,000 kilometers, winding through iconic regions of France and neighboring countries, featuring flat stages, punishing mountain climbs, and thrilling time trials before finishing in Paris.

How long is the race?
The race is 3 weeks long, with 21 stages punctuated by two rest days. Racers will cover 3320km (2060 miles) with 51,500m (169,127 feet) of climbing.

What stages can Visma | Lease a Bike riders win?
Visma is laser-focused on the overall general classification win with two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard. He is their rider most likely to win a stage, undoubtedly in the high mountains, but Matteo Jorgenson could finally take his first Tour stage win after several close calls, and Giro d’Italia champion Simon Yates could add to the two stages he won in 2019. Or Wout Van Aert could secure his 10th stage win, either in the flat time trial or perhaps a day for the breakaway.
